This colonial style, detached house has been recently reconstructed and extended to as high a standard of energy efficiency as can be achieved with an older property. All of its heating and hot water requirement is provided by a wood gasification boiler housed in a plant room attached to the side of the house.

An 18 kW EcoAngus Orligno 200 wood gasification boiler is linked to a 1000 litre Akvair Solar Plus accumulator tank via a pressurised circuit. A Laddomat 21-60 maintains the efficiency of combustion within the boiler and regulates the rate at which the store is charged. The circuit includes a 120 litre expansion vessel.

Protection against overheating is provided by a thermal safety valve which, if the temperature in the store charging circuit reaches 95°C, will open to admit cold water through a ‘quench’ coil in the boiler jacket.

The owners have access to supplies of free timber and have virtually eliminated any cost of fuel for heating their home.
